This documentary, which pioneered the ultra-wide IMAX format, follows the history of flight from the earliest hot air balloons to manned space missions. Commissioned by the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. for its grand opening, the film captures aerial panoramas of Niagara Falls, aerobatic maneuvers by the Blue Angels, the excitement of a rocket lift-off, and the serenity of hang gliding. Directed and co-written by Jim Freeman and Greg MacGillivray, the film is among the most popular diocumentaries ever produced and has garnered awards domestically and internationally.

A new take on a relatively old genre, Blazing Angels is a two-volume game series that focuses on squadron-based aerial combat during World War II. The player takes the part of the main character in each game and leads the squadron through a series of missions that center around the elimination of enemy forces in the every theater of the conflict using one of the multitude of aircraft produced by the Allies (United States, Britain, Russia) and the Axis (Germany, Japan). The game features first-person (cockpit) and third-person (chase camera) views as well as traditional arcade and home console flight control schemes. Players can select which they want according to their personal preference.
On paper, you’re going to be doing a lot of shooting. Realistically, you’ll probably be doing the squishy bits first, and then flinging yourself out of harm’s way and rolling into another zone. As with the D&D-inspired Warplanes we played for Tales From The New World , you just need to make sure you’ve worked out the rules and put in the time to make sure you can do that stuff, and on that level Crack Angels 2 is a pretty good game.
I’m not really a cartoonist and have never been a fan of turn-based strategy games. Planes, not so much, but the rest? Crack Angels 2 is an interesting exception, and I’d actually suggest giving it a go on Steam for PC if you’re a strategy fan. In fact, why not give the whole series a try, especially if you’re a fan of WWI or WWII and the game’s a bit like Battletech. There’s an accessibility control that lets you turn off special effects like smoke and explosions, though the game defaults to very loud going in. It also defaults to very slow movement, but that’s fine. This isn’t a game for speed freaks.
The difficulty settings are very clearly labelled as easy, normal and hard. The PC versions of the game do offer an optional rule that allows you to manipulate the difficulty setting to make the game turn into a real-time strategy, though you can’t do that at the outset. If you want to play it that way, you have to press the difficulty control and then reset the difficulty to its default value. You also get a couple of secret missions, including a two-player cooperative mission that’s entirely hidden from the manual. You also get an update page in the game’s PC manual, which I was told is the way the developer is supposed to let you know about major changes to the game. Of course, there’s also the option to buy both manual and box from the developer’s site, so you’re not entirely out of pocket.
